Check it Out!

The weather is finally suitable for you to start on that home renovation you’ve been dreaming about. And look at that, someone just showed up on your doorstep to let you know they're doing work in your neighbourhood and can give you a great deal if you sign up with them today — what a coincidence! Please put down that pen and take a step back.

While most qualified contractors are hard-working and ethical, there are those problematic ones who can unfortunately ruin it for everyone. If you’re not sure which category the stranger on your doorstep falls into, remember that you should never feel any pressure to commit to anything on the spot. Instead, get the person’s business card, politely thank them for their offer, then shut the door so you can go and do your research. Chances are very good that their “today only” special will still be available later, should you choose their services.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has tips to assist you in finding the best resources to successfully accomplish your home renovations. In fact, a good starting point is to go online and check your supplier’s business profile through the BBB. It will validate the business’s contact information, confirm how long the contractor has been in business, display verified customer reviews and any complaint details, and convey how the business responded to those problems.

When deciding between contractors, it’s crucial to get all the quotes in writing. Included in each quote should be a breakdown of the scope of the work and the materials involved, and an itemization of all the costs. Once you choose your contractor, also have them verify, in writing, a detailed deposit and payment schedule, and the start and expected completion dates.
